A Quick Tour of My Shop

Welcome to my shop! Hello! My name is Norman Dann, welcome to my silver shop. I work in my little shop here in my home several hours every day. Both my father and grandfather were accomplished New England silversmiths, and they have taught me much about my beloved craft.
Each design starts with finding the right piece of sliver. I use coins, spoons, plates, and other sterling silver objects to start. Depending on what the starting piece is, and what I want to create from it, I might pound it out and polish it flat, or begin cutting it immediately. Sometimes the Dremmel tools are indispensible, but I do most of the work with a fine metal coping saw.

Starting a new plaque I'm afraid that I have to treat the methods for getting designs onto the silver as a trade secret. Sorry! It's not too terribly high tech, but once it's done, I'll start drilling starter holes so that I can get the saw into the piece. It's always important to be delicate -- what's left behind can often be less than an eighth of an inch wide in places!
Yes, this is labor intensive work. Earrings don't take too long, but by the time I finish working on this plate, it will have taken several dozen hours of cutting and polishing... and I still haven't built a frame for it yet!

Thank you for coming by the shop. Please look around in the See My Products pages to see photographs of my work. Every piece is unique, so fully custom requests are not a problem. If you'd like to talk to me about purchasing some of my work, please see the Contact The Artist page.

See you soon! --- Norm
